At many Disney attractions, there will be a set of boxes that give out FastPasses, and then two lines. One line is labeled Standby, and the other is FastPass return. The Standby is long, and the FastPass is short. You can save many hours with this system.
Using FastPass will save you loads of time. Put your park ticket into the FastPass box. It will return it along with a small ticket (shown above).
Return to the ride in the time window and you'll get on in less than 10 minutes. There was only one ride where we had problems - the Space Ranger Spin in Disneyworld. The attendant felt sorry for the people in the standby line and let many standby people go in front of the FastPass people. (bad attendant! That defeats the purpose of planning ahead!) It still only took about 20 minutes for that line, as compared to the hour plus in the standby line.
Some notes -
You are only allowed to have one Fastpass window at a time. Once your window comes up, you can get another FastPass. At Universal, if you have a multi-day ticket, you can get more than 1 ride reservation.
If you want to ride twice, then get a FastPass and stand in line. Assuming the queue isn't too long, you'll be able to get off and then get back on.
Sometimes they run out of time slots and thus close FastPass. This happened to me on Test Track. I did the single rider line, however, and got on quickly.
That's it.. it's simple, and it works.
